Boavista Golf Hosts the 2006 Sir Henry Cooper and Mike Reid charity golf classic

The second round of the Sir Henry Cooper Mike Reid Charity Golf Classic was held at Boavista Golf Resort on Thursday 18th May. This popular annual event was raising funds for the Comedians Golfing Society, the Rockdale Appeal, the Mary Hare Primary School and the British Heart Foundation.

For the first time in 5 years the weather was not at it’s best and although it stayed dry, a strong wind made conditions difficult for the players. To add a little more interest to this year’s competition the organisers had arranged for a Saab Cabriolet to be the prize for a hole-in-one at Boavista’s 6th hole and if that wasn’t enough, there was also a Club Car golf buggy up for grabs for anyone who completed the same feat at the 14th.

Leaders from round one, which had been played at Palmares Golf Club on May 15th were Sony 1 with celebrity Brian Close, the former England cricket captain on 87 points, with teams led by Sion Tudor-Owen and Clive Abbot only 1 point behind. The difficult weather conditions made scoring harder and it was Clive Abbot’s team, Sony 3, who mastered the course best on day two, in the process managing to create an overall lead of 5 points after a superb score of 86. The joint second place teams were the Regal Bandits led by Clive Russell and Sion Tudor-Owen’s Herald Graphics. At the end of play, Phillip Pope Boavista Resort’s Managing Director, formally welcomed Sir Henry and Mike before presenting them with a cheque for £10,000 towards the charity. All of the players and their guests then gathered at the Boavista club house for a barbeque with entertainment provided by the Algarve’s own Ilze with a little “help” from several of the celebrities.

In the celebrities individual competition, regular visitor Dave Jessup led the way from day one finishing on level par (72 points) after the rounds at Palmares and Boavista. His experience was always going to be a big factor and Dave, who plays off 3, shot another level par round at Penina to finish a comfortable 4 points ahead of darts player John Lowe.
